Merle and family - I was so sorry to read of Col Heinz's passing. I worked for him in the 1980s, first at ATC Civil Engineering at Randolph and then went with him to SARPMA at Fort Sam, where we were together until his retirement. He was always one of my favorite bosses, always so kind and considerate - and fun! He had a great, dry sense of humor. He was always very protective of me and I definitely considered him a friend as well as boss. I'll always remember him with fondness.

I was not fortunate enough to know Don for very long but it was long enough to realize what a special person he was. He always greeted me with a smile and a hug and made me feel welcome and loved. I will miss him very much! My sincere condolences go out to his family.

To Merle and family,
Franklin and I were deeply sadden to hear of Don's death. You all are a special family in our hearts. Although its been a long time since you have moved away, we think of you often. I will never forget the Saturday night of July 15, 1972 when Franklin was away playing in the band and I went into labor. I called your home and asked for Merle but she and the children were gone to A&M attending a baseball game (I think). Don asked me what was wrong and of course I had to tell him. Immediately he offered to take me to the hospital. The staff kept calling him Mr. Gold but did not mind. He stayed until they got me to a room and I told him that I would be okay and that he could leave. I understood that when Merle got home and found out what he had done, she told him that he should not have left me alone. She and her son David rushed back to the hospital to be with me. My husband got to the hospital into the early hours of June 16 just before our son was born and that was because Don left a note on our car (where it was parked to meet the other guys in the band) and advised him to immediately go to the hospital.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to each one of you.
Love,
Franklin and Betty Gold

Six years ago Geri and I were staying with Don and Merle during one of her 5 day infusions and I went into the kitchen to have coffee and start the day. Don was already up and was sitting at the table with his coffee and newspaper in front of him.
He was holding his (her) dog in his arm and rubbing the dog's belly with his hand. He sat there for some time and then said, "Harold, I can't even drink my coffee or read my newspaper in the mornings anymore, I have to hold Bo".
I'm sure he instantly read my mind and probably wished to slap the smirk off my face as I wanted to say to him, "Don, just put the dog on the floor and read your newspaper and drink your coffee".
But that was Don Heinz, always putting someone else or an animal ahead of himself without hesitation. I will always remember Don for a lifetime of kindness to me and others. Don had many accomplishments but the number one outstanding performance of his life was that he took care of my sister and his family.
