Major Peter B. Mangum, USAF (Ret.)

Bossier City, LA – Peter B. Mangum, 80, died August 26, 2020.    He was born March 5, 1940, the second of four children of the late the late Peyton Bloxom Mangum and Myrtie Bolton Mangum.

He was a long-time parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church and member of their choir until more recently becoming a member of the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans where his oldest son is rector.  He was faithful to his outreach volunteer ministry at Christian Services and Adult Faith Formation.  He loved his faithful friends who met daily at Café USA.

With Covid and the hurricane, the funeral services will be private.

Peter’s brother George (wife Shirley) predeceased him.   He is survived by five sons: Fr. Peter of Shreveport; Shak (Edward) and his wife Robin, of Centreville, Va.; Chris of Homestead, FL; Vincent of Virginia Beach, VA; and Daniel and wife Meredith, of Conway, AR, and their children whom he loved, Myra, Peyton and John, and nine other grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 21 years.  Peter distinguished himself during the Vietnam War with numerous medal. He excelled at his second career, opening the Walmart at Bert Kouns and Youree and working there its first 20 years, especially in the Garden Center, where he was known as an expert in the area of horticultural knowledge.  He fancied himself an amateur ornithologist.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Office of Vocations of the Diocese of Shreveport, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

A special thanks to Tom Hudson and Mary Preziosi who were particularly attentive and compassionate this last month of Peter’s life.

“Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended.  When the body of our earthly dwelling lies in death we gain an everlasting dwelling place in heaven.”
