Obituary of Billy Grant Mangham
Billy Grant Mangham, 89, a resident of Haughton, Louisiana died March 3, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Shreveport.
He is survived by his two sons, Michael Grant Mangham, Raymond William Mangham and his grandson Jackson Grant Mangham.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry Grant Mangham, mother, Inez Hilliard Mangham and brother Gerry Hilliard Mangham and Gerry’s wife Joy Juneau Mangham.
Billy was raised in Pineville, Louisiana and graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1948.
He attended Auburn University from 1952 to 1956 graduating with a B.S. in education.
Billy served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952 becoming a staff sergeant in the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines Item Company. He was a veteran of the Korean War Chosin Reservoir Campaign in 1950. A picture of Billy with the Item Company appeared in Life Magazine December 25, 1950.
Billy began his teaching career at Franklin High School in Franklin, Louisiana where he taught English and Speech from 1956 to 1958. Next, he taught 6th grade at Benton Elementary School from 1959 to 1964. He then moved to Houma, Louisiana where he taught at Evergreen Middle School from 1964 to 1967. Billy ended his teaching career at Haughton High School where he taught Louisiana history from 1967 to 1980.
Billy then went to work for the Bossier City Tax Assessor’s office, retiring in 2018 after 25 years of service. He had many wonderful friends that he made from his years teaching school and working at the tax assessor’s office.
Billy had a passion for history, especially Louisiana history. He loved hunting and fishing and rooting for his beloved Auburn Tigers football team. His friends appreciated and enjoyed his culinary talents, especially for his smoked meats like brisket, sausage, ham and boudin.
Services will be held at the Believer’s Worship Center, 6068 Hwy 3, Benton, LA 71006 on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 2:00 PM with Danny Moffit officiating. Interment will be held in the Hebert Cemetery in Caldwell Parish on Friday, March 8, 2019.
