Shreveport, La.-Funeral services for Mr. Severyn Dennis were held at Natchez National Cemetery, Natchez, MS on Friday, February 9, 2007. Mr. Dennis passed away on February 2, 2007 at Lifecare Hospital in Shreveport, LA. At the age of 17, he entered The U.S. Marine Corps and spent the next 23 years serving our country in three wars. He received numerous awards, citations, and ceremonies in his honor because of the work he did. Some of them include: the Silver Star in which he won after cleaning out mines in hostile enemy territory during the advance on Seoul. At the young age of 25, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for staying behind to destroy equipment and blew up bridges just ahead of the advancing Chinese Communist troops. Dennis who also saw action at Scipan Tipian Levte and Okinawa as a Navy small boat crewman during WWII, was awarded a Letter of Commendation in 1944 for his part in a fire and rescue party when a landing shop blew up. In addition to these decorations, the sergeant, a former Iron Mountain high student, is authorized to wear the Good Conduct Medal ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon, Philippine Liberation ribbon, American Theater ribbon, Presidential Unit citation, and Victory Medal. Sergeant Dennis' actions, appropriately, fit the last words of his medal citations, "were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United Naval Service." His display of leadership and initiative was strictly responsible for the removal of approximately 175 anti-tank mines impeding the advance…of troops. "When enemy fire was the heaviest, he ordered his team to take cover and fearlessly proceeded alone…ahead of tanks, pulling out mines and cleaning an approach route. Although on many occasions, the infantry assault units…were pinned down by heavy and accurate enemy fire, he, voluntarily and with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved forward alone to breach enemy minefields and point out targets of opportunity to the tank gunners." Mr. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Victoria Dennis and son, Chris Dennis. He is survived by his wife, Betty S. Dennis, two sons, Michael and David Dennis, and several grandchildren. Mr. Dennis was also survived by his wife's children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, and daughters-in-law, whom he loved deeply and they will miss him very much. The family would like to thank Mary Grace of Medi-Star, Jennifer Vescou,Kay Williams and Dr. Green and the staff of LifeCare. The whole LifeCare team "always gave hope" and was very caring and loving. BOONE FUNERAL HOMES BOSSIER CHAPEL 742-5361
