Shreveport, LA Graveside services for Jo Ann Phillips Scheen will be at l:00 pm, Monday, December 5, 2011, at Plain Dealing Cemetery, Plain Dealing, LA, with her grandson, Pastor Mark Rodie of First Baptist Bossier officiating. Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at Boone Funeral Home, Bossier City, LA, from l0:00 am until 12:00 pm, also on Monday. Jo Ann passed away Friday, December 2, 2011, at Willis-Knighton North in Shreveport, LA. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi, May 22, l930, but lived in Plain Dealing, LA until her marriage to Frederick Gowen Scheen Jr. of Coushatta, La. Fred and Jo Ann enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking, playing bridge and square dancing together and were married for 53 years. Jo Ann is a graduate of Northwestern University, with a degree in elementary education. She was a dedicated teacher for 35 years, teaching in Bossier Parish, at Plantation Park and Greenacres Junior High, where she worked with the gifted program,1959-1986. She later taught in Augusta, GA, l990-l998. Mrs. Scheen loved her family, country and God, being a member of the First Southern Methodist Church of Shreveport for over 30 years, and recently, a member of Emmanuel Baptist in Shreveport, La. She was a patriot, who encouraged family, friends and students to understand the constitution and to vote wisely. She was very proud to be a member of the John Birch Society for 40 years. Bridge-playing was a special pastime for Jo Ann, but especially during her retirement years, obtaining her life master in duplicate bridge. Preceded in death is her husband, Fred Scheen Jr. and her parents Arthur and Myrtle Phillips of Plain Dealing, LA. She is survived by her sister, Janet Myrtee Phillips Tyler and brother-in-law, Maurice Tyler of Lake Charles, LA; a son, Frederick Gowen Scheen lll and daughter-in-law, Megan Scheen of Austin, TX; 3 daughters, Janet Arthur Taylor of Sarasota, FL; Cynthia Rodie of Shreveport, and Georgia Stone and son-in-law, Dr. Coy Stone of Greeneville, TN. Jo Ann is also survived by l4 grandchildren and l0 great-grandchildren.
