Obituary of Bennie Weaver Bell

Please share a memory of Bennie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On January 10, 1939, Bennie Weaver Bell joined the growing family of Wiley and Emmie Bell, the fourth of nine children. He spent his childhood years exploring the creeks, hills, and hollers around Castor, La.

Upon graduation from Castor High School, he came to the city to seek his fortune. Shortly thereafter, he married his “girl” Athie Mae Carter. The fortune was slow in coming, but began to accumulate with the birth of Angela, his first child and then Pamela six years later. He was blessed with a good job as a conductor with Kansas City Southern Railway for 38 years.

Of course, we can’t leave out his great passion -the game of golf. He had so many wonderful memories of his golfing days and much love for his golfing buddies. His greatest joy was his granddaughter Savannah Rose Prentice, “squirt” he called her. Benny never had any doubt from whom his blessings flowed. He was a man with a thankful heart.

He is survived by his “girl” of fifty seven years Athie Carter Bell, two daughters, Angel Rice (Robin) and Pam Ball (John) , newly married granddaughter and her husband , Savannah and Austin Prentice, two sisters, Melba Vice and Barbara Quarles, one brother , David Bell and sister-in-law Clara, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and one remaining aunt, Minnie Bell. Preceding him were Wiley and Emmie Bell, Jewel Woods, Mae Wilson, Larry and Dolphus Bell. Many thanks to all who have tended to him so wonderfully at WK South and Pierremont. Special thanks to the angels with no wings at Garden Park. Also, Drs. Raj Gandhi and Robert Nickleson. Wonderful neighbors Ray and Gloria Small and their four daughters . A forever bond of love. A celebration of Bennie’s life will be held on October 6th at 3 pm at the family home. Donations can be made to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation.
