I knew Rich had a half-brother but he never spoke of him. Bob was considerably older than Rich and they never really lived as "brothers." One day, however, the phone rang, Rich answered it and had what seemed from my end to be an unusual conversation. After Rich hung up he said, "My brother Bob wants to come see me." They hadn't been in touch for many years.
Bob and Gladys arrived at our house a few weeks later. The two men greeted each other like unfamiliar business associates, stiffly, politely shaking hands. We sat down with soft drinks--Bob was way past his drinking days--and slowly the stiff conversation began to loosen up. Before my eyes I saw these two men recognize their opportunity to connect with long lost family. Bob was animated and immensely happy. He had found in Gladys what I had found in Rich--a soul mate. They didn't stay long but hugged goodbye when they left. That visit marked the beginning of dozens of emails between them over the years until Rich died in 2003. Gladys died the year before.
I was lucky that Bob let me stay in his life, sharing Liz and the girls with me. I knew him as a different person from the one the Gahn family described in his younger years. I found him to be kind, humble, and wise. He help me work through the grief of losing my soul mate because he was working through the lose of his. We struggled with our mutual efforts to find someone else to fill the huge holes our partners left. Of course, we did not.
I miss simply knowing that he was a part of our earthly world.
