Obituary of James Roger Taylor

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

CSM (Ret.) James Roger Taylor was born March 21, 1937 in Springfield, Ohio. James joined the Army when he was 16 years old and proudly served for 30 years until he retired. James’ bravery during the Korean and Vietnam wars earned him several purple hearts and a bronze metal. As an Infantry/Artillery drill sergeant at Fort Polk, LA he was best known as “Top” to his recruits and though he was hard on them, he was well respected.

Upon retiring from the Army, James relocated to Las Vegas, NV with his wife. He went to school to become a truck driver which was always a dream of his and which he continued to do until his full retirement in 2002. In 2006 they moved back to Louisiana to be near family.

Surrounded by family, James died June 3, 2020 in his home from a longtime illness.

James Taylor is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon M. Taylor; sons Richard R. Taylor, of Madison, WI and Dale C. Taylor, of Palm Bay, FL; daughter Debra D. Taylor and granddaughter Mackenzye E. Taylor, both of Bossier City, LA.

Funeral services for James will be held June 10, 2020 at Immanuel Lutheran Church 2565 Airline Drive, Bossier City, LA. Viewing will be from 10am to 11am with service to follow. James will be laid to rest at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville, LA with military honors.

The Taylor family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to Immanuel Lutheran Church
