Obituary of William Carter

Captain William Hugus Carter, Ret. USAF Bossier City, LA Ret. Captain William Hugus Carter passed on from this life December 13, 2010 at his home in Bossier City, LA. Mr. Carter was a distinguished airman, serving tours in Europe during the Second World War and during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his honorable service to his country, he was a devoted husband to his wife of 58 years, Beryl Scothorn Carter, and a loving father to his three sons Scott, Randy, and Bob. Mr. Carter was born October 4, 1919 in Trenton, New Jersey. He attended Allentown High School in Allentown, New Jersey where he was active in athletics. He enlisted in the army air corps in 1942 and soon served as a bombardier during his tour in Europe while stationed in Hardwick, England. His skill and courage demonstrated during missions in the Bay of Biscay earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. In the Korean War, Mr. Carter?s heroism earned him the Air Metal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He also participated in projects that advanced America?s defenses with Operation Ivy in the Marshall Islands. While stationed in Roswell New Mexico, he met Beryl Scothorn. Beryl worked as the Service Club director on the base; the two were wed December 6, 1952. After his tours abroad, he and his family lived in many cities including Austin, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; Goose Bay, Canada; and Omaha, Nebraska. His final stent in the military was piloting Looking Glass aircraft with the Strategic Air Command. In 1966 he graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor's degree. After Mr. Carter retired from the Air Force in 1972 with thirty years of service, he went on to work for the Louisiana Social Security Administration for another ten years. He was very passionate about the game of golf throughout his lifetime. Mr. Carter is survived by his loving wife Beryl Scothorn Carter; his three sons William Scott of San Pedro, California; Randy Carter (Bonnie) of Atlanta, Georgia; Bob Carter (Leta) of Texarkana, Texas. Also survived by grandsons Joseph Carter of Arlington, Texas; Luke Carter of Atlanta, Georgia; Nicholas Carter of Atlanta, Georgia; Carter Northcutt of Shreveport, Louisiana; Josh Northcutt (Julie) of Texarkana, Arkansas; Harry Curtin of Atlanta, Georgia; three Great-granddaughters and numerous golfing friends from the Fox Run golf course at Barksdale Air Force Base. A funeral service for Mr. Carter will be conducted Friday, December 17, 2010, 11:00 AM at Boone Funeral Home, Bossier City, LA. Officiating will be Rev. David Dietzel. Interment will follow at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Keithville, LA. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, December 16, 2010 from 5 PM until 7 PM at Boone Funeral Home.
