Greg Howe posted a condolence

Though we never had the pleasure and joy of meeting Whayland face-to-face and visiting the beautiful Veteran's Memorial in Belcher, he holds a treasured place in our hearts and memories.
In March 2001, Whayland responded to a notice we had placed in the 32nd Division Veteran's Association newsletter seeking recollections of Colonel Merle Howe. He called us and chatted about his personal experiences during the war and shared some details about Colonel Howe's death in a plane crash. This was the beginning of a vigorous correspondence that stretched out over 8 years.
Whayland was such a gentleman and so very generous with his time, knowledge and memories. We admire his devotion to getting the Veteran's Memorial built. If you visit it, look for the brick to Colonel Merle H. Howe and know that we (all 42 of his immediate family) are standing there alongside you and remembering all the honored soldiers; but, especially our friend, Whayland Greene.

Our condolences goes out to Mr. Greeneās Family and Linda Williams. My name is Louis Bordages and we met Mr. Green July 2015 in Branson Missouri and became friends with him and Linda. Our family made several trips to Bellshire to visit with him. Our first trip was when our bricks were laid in the Veterans Memorial. Our family was there also to celebrate his 95th birthday. He was a kind and friendly man and he will never be forgotten by our family. He was a great American patriot and loved his country. May God bless him.

My name is Sandra (Greene) Ralston. I am W.H.'s niece. My Dad was Alonzo R. Greene Jr. My memory of W.H. is when I bought my first car from him, it was a 1976 Buick Skylark. I worked for my Dad and the money I made from doing that went to buying that car. I think the last time I saw him was at my Dad's funeral. You are in my prayers,(family) you can email me at: countryfan086@gmail.com

My husband and I met Whayland Greene in 2012 when we were in Vivian for a family reunion. We were driving through Belcher, saw the memorial and stopped to see what it was all about. Out came Mr. Greene to visit with us and we enjoyed talking with him and taking pictures of the memorial. We stayed in touch with him and went to see him several times when we were back in the area. We had hoped to see him the summer of 2020 but couldn't because of the pandemic. Our telephone calls back and forth were always very special and we will miss his kindness, humor, and sweet sparkling smile. My last picture of him was taken with Dan's cousin Carole Idom when Mr. Greene visited the kids at her school for Veterans Day 2019. What a dear sweet friend he was to us. Prayers of peace and comfort for the family and know that we was very much appreciated. Linda & Dan Drake, Savannah, GA
