Obituary of Whayland Harvel Greene

Whayland Harvel (W.H.) Greene, 95, passed away at Carpenter House in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Sunday, January 10, 2021.

Because of the pandemic, there will be no service at this time.

W.H. was born in Haynesville, Louisiana, on February 25, 1925, to Alonzo Randolph Greene and Cassandra Wyche Greene. His family moved to Belcher and he lived the rest of his life within a mile of Belcher.

At the age of 18, W.H. enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served overseas through the end of World War II (WWII) and received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, and other honors for his service.

W.H. married Jo Ann Smith of Belcher on August 3, 1946. They had three children and were married until her passing on September 7, 2010.

W.H. kept in touch with friends from the army, and wrote about his experiences in the war. W.H. and Jo Ann were the driving force behind the Belcher Veterans Memorial. After much hard work and support from the community as well as other veterans and some state officials, the Belcher Veterans Memorial was dedicated on August 17, 2002.

W.H. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Jo Ann Smith Greene; his son, Richard Whayland (Ricky) Greene; and his seven siblings. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Greene Camus; his son, Wayne Smith Greene; grandchildren Melissa Hanna Brown (Trevor) and Wesley Michael Greene; great-grandchildren, Temperance Hanna Brown and Maxwell Vincent Brown; sister in law, Jane Stroud; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend Linda Williams.

The family wishes to thank Linda Williams, whose friendship has been an indescribable blessing since the loss of Jo Ann.
